This guide has been compiled to assist in locating hairdressers and hair care professionals throughout the region. Primarily an aid to finding hair stylists, some of the ladies hairdressers listed may offer a wider range of services, including image consultations and professional advice on hair styles, hair extensions, hair colouring etc. Many also sell beauty products and cosmetics, or employ makeup artists and beauticians to provide manicure, pedicure, toning, and waxing. Where this information is known we have included it in the listings. These will be updated on a regular basis. The guide covers hairdressers in the North Wales counties of Denbighshire, Flintshire, Clwyd, Conwy and Gwynedd as well as west Cheshire and the Wirral.

Misery

Monday, 16th Jun 2008

Since we discovered Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre earlier this year, we’ve only seen comedies. We’ve also only ever sat “up in the Gods” – mainly due to booking at the very last minute.

Last night was different. Very different.

This time we were in the stalls of this lovely old theatre, which are set out with tables and chairs in cabaret style. You are escorted to your table (ours was right in front of the stage) by an usherette who took the time to explain how to get to the toilets and the bar. We were really made to feel special.

And the price of all this decadence? – Ten quid!  And if you arrive an hour before curtain-up, you can even enjoy a fine meal prepared by the Royal Court’s head chef Simon Collard – winner of the TMP New Dish For Liverpool.

As for the show itself.  It was the 1987 Stephen King Thriller, Misery.  I must admit, I had doubted a thriller such as this would translate into a stage play.  Boy was I wrong!  The publicity had promised we’d be on the edge of our seats – and they were damn right!

Ex Coronation Street and Early Doors actress Joan Kempson was convincingly psychopathic in the role of the terrifying Annie Wilkes.

Playing opposite her was Andrew Schofield.  Andrew was the archetype scouser in the previous two performances we’d seen at the Royal Court: “Brick up the Mersey Tunnel” and “On the Ledge“.   He was so very funny in both these comedies.

In “Misery” he is cast in the role of Paul Sheldon, a famous american author, and his performance was nothing short of brilliant.

These two talented actors got a well deserved ovation from the first-night packed house and I can thoroughly recommend it.  Misery runs until July 5th.

A synopsis of the storyline can be found below: Read the rest of this entry »

Keeping in Touch

Saturday, 14th Jun 2008

Dring, dring…

“Hi Dad it’s Isaac…”

It’s nice, isn’t it, that they make the time to keep in touch,  Especially when they are all the way upstairs in the attic bedroom!

“I’ve sold the Iceman on eBay. Can you pop it in the post for me?”

Hmm. Why do I get the feeling this bad back is being milked for all it’s worth.

“No Dad… I told them it would be posted out today.”

In fairness, he has been bed ridden for the best part of three days. So I fell for it – despite the fact the chiropractor said he really should get up and moving around to supple up the muscles prior to his appointment on Monday.

For the benefit of the uninitiated, the Iceman is a six stringed axe-like instrument of doom (well, heavy metal at least), so “popping it into the post” was going to be more than just a quick lick-and-stick. One hour, yards of bubble-wrap, three disassembled then reconstructed cardboard boxes, and a disobedient stanley knife later and the Ibanez Iceman was on its way to its new owner. And I – having missed my footing on the post office steps – was limping my way back down Market Street with a dodgy back!

I wonder if I could get away with retiring to my bed to take advantage of room service and get everyone running around for me?

Yea right!

A Summer Garden Party

Wednesday, 11th Jun 2008

A Summer Garden Party is being held in Ruthin to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The event is being held on the 21st June at 6.30pm and will feature a Hog roast/BBQ, various stalls and lots of good old-fashioned games.

And if that’s not enough – you can even grab a bargain in the auction of promises and raffle. The prizes include a membership voucher from the Vale Country Club and a voucher for a makeover photo session and framed portrait at BeautyPhoto Studios.

The venue is Rossignol, on the Mold Road. Tickets are £10.00 each and are available from Clemency-Joy Godfrey at Autoproducts (tel: 01824 707555)

I stopped to think…

More Passport Photo Rules

Friday, 30th May 2008

Backgrounds must now be 5%-10% grey – not white!

This “new rule” has actually been in place since the guidelines were laid down by the Identity and Passport Service three years ago.

This year, however, they are applying the ‘new’ standards for passport photos more rigorously. The regulations have always stated that the background for passport photos should be off-white, or 5% – 10% grey.  During 2008 they will begin rejecting photos taken against a white background.

Employing a professional to produce your passport photographs may cost a few pounds more (we charge £10) but it can actually work out cheaper than having two or three attempts at getting it right in a photo booth. Not to mention the inconvenience of having to go through all the rigmarole again should the passport office reject them.

Don’t Like It!

Monday, 19th May 2008

Don’t you just love embarrassing your children!

I mean, it’s payback time for all the times they embarrassed you as they were growing up.

Jordan has long since refused to go shopping with us, for fear we might do a ‘Lou and Andy’.  How soon they forget the times they used to run around the supermarket swopping price labels on the goods and dropping packets of condoms in elderly ladies’ shopping trolleys.

So it seemed appropriate that on Jordan’s18th birthday we create a suitable card – with his parents taking the role of the Little Britain characters.

And just to prove we don’t really  look like Lou and Andy, here’s a shot of us enjoying pre dinner birthday drinks at The Wynnstay.

Oh dear!  On second thoughts, I’d better change that to:  at least Jayne doesn’t really look like one of the Little Britain crew.

“…I don’t like it!”

It’s a Boy!

Saturday, 17th May 2008

…but then we knew that already.  Why do they do that these days?  I mean – what was wrong with waiting until the baby was born before knowing whether it was a bloke or a blokette?

Thomas WilliamThey used to wrap the baby in a towel and hand it to the mother with a nice cup of tea and a cheery: “congratulations Mrs Screamer – it’s a…”  Now they just say “Right, you’re done.  Get yourself off home so we can clear up this mess”.   I swear they only encourage fathers to be present at the birth so they can have the car ticking over outside the delivery suite ready to whisk mother and newborn away in double quick time!

That’s just it, I guess: they can save valuable time (and tea) by finding out the sex before hand.  It seems they can employ less qualified staff in the delivery room.  And at midwiffery collage, they can skip the whole year where they teach them how to tell the difference!

Anywayz – Thomas William has come into the world.  All eight pounds eleven ounces of him.  Born, in case you’re wondering, to Jane Elizabeth Birchall my daughter  - not Jayne Elizabeth Birchall my wife (complicated innit!).  Yesterday I became a grand-parent.Grandfather and grandson

Ten tiny fingers and a similar number of tiny toes.  He looks just like Steve, but then nobody’s perfect.

I jest. Steve is an absolute star.  Top man.  A father can only hope his daughters end up with decent blokes and I’ve been blessed twice.

Hmmm. Now that we’re back home from our visit to meet young Tom, I’m trying to work out why Jayne-with-a-’Y’ has got that old familiar glint in her eye!

Mr May – Cheeky Chappies 2008

Thursday, 1st May 2008

Now, I’m pretty good at navigating websites and second-guessing the nuances of wizz kid designers.  So whilst I won’t go as far as to say the new Spicer Hallfield website actually got me beat, time is money, and after fifteen minutes of trying to locate the products I wanted, I caved in and picked up the phone.

Me: Hello, I’d like to place an order please.
SH: I’m sorry we can’t take your order over the phone.

After explaining I couldn’t locate the items on their new web site, she put me through to someone called Mark who kindly talked me through the intricacies of the new portal.  Apparently it is easier to enter a keyword, such as “Classic” to narrow down the number of items you have to scroll through!  Once you’ve found the album you require, however, there is no link to buy spare pages for that album.  You have to start a completely new search, again guessing what the best keyword might be this time!

OK, so we’re getting there.  Wait…!  It states on the website that Read the rest of this entry »

Oh Knickers! – Don’t get Shirty!

Monday, 28th Apr 2008

Charli models the Cheeky Chappies tee-shirts and knickersWhilst in the thick of decorating and floor-laying last week, we reopened the studio briefly (pun intended) to do a quick fashion shoot in the name of charity.

Roger (Mr July) of Autoproducts, has been testing out his company’s new printing press by putting all the Cheeky Chappies calendar pictures onto tee shirts to be sold for charity.

The calendar itself raised over £2,700 for North Wales Cancer Services.  It is hoped the sale of the printed tee-shirts will push the total to over £3,000.

Law student Charli, of Bodfari, took time out from her studies to model the garments.  It was hard to believe she had never modelled before.  She was an absolute pleasure to work with.

So if one of the Cheeky Chappies is close to your… erm.. heart, you will soon be able to buy one of these limited edition sets via the Cheeky Chappies web site or at selected outlets in Ruthin.

More pictures on the Cheeky Chappies web site soon.

On The Ledge

Sunday, 27th Apr 2008

We’ve just enjoyed another great night out in Liverpool.

The evening began with a nosh at the Everyman Bistro. Who cares if it’s like sitting in a school canteen – the food was brilliant. Loads of vegetarian choices and lots of gluten-free dishes too. (It truly is the mark of a good, caring, restaurant when they acknowledge the one in fourteen of us who are veggies and the ever growing number who are medically intolerant to wheat). The atmosphere in there was great too. And it was interesting ear-wigging Matthew Kelly and his chums on the next table!

Our theatre tickets, however, were for elsewhere. So we left the Matthews Rixon and Kelly to perform their Endgame at The Everyman and walked back into the city centre.

Alan Bleasdale penned On The Ledge some fifteen years ago, and has rewritten parts of this black comedy for it’s current airing at the Royal Court Theatre.

It is set three stories up Read the rest of this entry »
